Oud is the perfumery name associated with agarwood: aromatic, resin-rich wood produced by certain Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees. Resin formation is a response to injury and stress, with biological processes that are more complicated than the familiar “a tree infected by a fungus” explanation. Research on wounded Aquilaria examines that response directly.
Natural oud oils can smell woody, leathery, resinous, smoky or animalic, with considerable variation. In a finished perfume, “oud” may describe natural oil, a reconstructed accord or a blend. A smooth smell does not prove the absence of natural oud, and a pungent smell does not prove its presence.
The useful choice is between styles: rose and sweet amber can soften the wood; incense and leather can emphasize darkness; fruit can supply a vivid contrast. Agarwood-producing species also feature in CITES trade controls. Sourcing claims require documentation from the supplier rather than assumptions based on a bottle’s name or price.
