Jasmine’s scent is broader than a simple white-flower sweetness. Two important perfumery species are Jasminum grandiflorum and Jasminum sambac. Supplier descriptions of their extracts include green and fruity facets as well as the full floral scent; neither species is a guarantee of a clean or an animalic finished perfume.
IFF’s jasmine sambac absolute is made by solvent extraction followed by alcohol purification. Jasmine absolutes contain multiple odorants, including indole. Hedione, a separate synthetic aroma material, can contribute a lighter jasmine-like floral effect. A perfumer may use extracts and individual materials together.
The difference to look for when sampling is the setting around the flower. Green notes can suggest fresh petals; tuberose makes a fuller white-floral blend; sandalwood or amber gives the flowers a warmer background. An indolic edge is one possible facet, not a test for natural jasmine content.
